QR Code Scan

Tasks

The QR Code Scan Task lets event hosts guide players through interactive experiences like treasure hunts, venue explorations, or checkpoint challenges using QR codes. You create the prompt, generate/download a QR code, and place it physically or digitally. Players follow hints to locate and scan it—instantly progressing the game and keeping momentum high. Use this task to direct teams to key spots (e.g., campus statues, branded booths, hidden markers) or encourage discovery across an event space. Scan data is captured and stored securely, letting hosts track completion and review participation later.

How to Create QR Code Scan Tasks

Step 1: Open the Deckle app or use the web version.

Step 2: Choose your game type — Group or Solo.

  • Group Mode: Players team up before starting. You can allow them to pick their teams or let Deckle auto-assign groups using emoji matching. Each participant is given a random emoji, and they pair up by finding someone with the same one. Group mode is great for collaboration and team work.

  • Solo Mode: Players participate independently. If you want them to explore a place, learn about new things, or simply complete challenges on their own, solo mode is for you.

  2. Select QR Code as the task submission type.

  3. Enter a Task Prompt (e.g., “Find and scan the QR code near the main entrance”).

  4. Click Done to save the task.

How to Use Your QR Code

Step 1: Download the QR code onto your computer
After creating the task, click “Download” to save the QR code file. Keep it handy for printing or digital display.

Step 2: Print out physical copies of the QR code
Use a standard printer or a professional print service for durability. Print multiple copies if you want backups or several checkpoints.

Note: Each QR code is unique to the task and can only be scanned for that specific task. Codes cannot be reused or swapped between different QR code tasks.

Step 3: Attach the QR code at the location
Staple, tape, or mount the QR code securely on your intended spot (e.g., wall, sign, booth, or object). Make sure it’s visible enough to be found but still fits the level of challenge you want.

Tips & Best Practices

Creating a QR Code Scan Task is quick — but these optional features and best practices will make it more engaging and reliable:

Add a Task Description

Give extra context to your prompt. You can include:

  • A hint for scavenger hunts (“Look near the library steps — knowledge is always close by”)

  • A short themed message from the host (“The treasure lies where the banners fly high”)

  • A quick explanation of the purpose (“This checkpoint marks halfway through your race — scan to continue!”)

Assign Default Points

Add points to reward players when they complete the scan.

  • Higher points for hard-to-find codes, lower points for simple checkpoints.

  • Points accumulate on the leaderboard, encouraging friendly competition and motivating players to complete every task.

Upload a Task Image

Use visuals to support your prompt. For example:

  • Show a landmark so players know what they’re searching for

  • Add a themed image (e.g., treasure chest for a hunt, company logo for a branded event)

Enable Location Function

Guide players by showing them where to search.

  • Before they can scan, they’ll see the target location on a map

  • Perfect for large venues, outdoor races, or when you want to direct foot traffic to specific checkpoints

Customize the Finish Page

Surprise and reward players when they scan the QR code. You can:

  • Display a celebratory message (“Great job — checkpoint unlocked!”)

  • Reveal the next clue or step in the journey

  • Show a branded graphic or sponsor’s logo to reinforce event identity
