Designed by architect F.D. Scarborough, the Baillieu Library was the first purpose-built academic library in Australia. When the library first opened in 1959, a competition to design a mural for the foyer was held. The winning entry, Norma Redpath's Areopagitica, is still in place today.

Over 200,000 rare and historic books, serials, pamphlets and literary archives are housed in the Baillieu Library’s special collections. It is the largest non-governmental archive in Australia – if you lined up the storage boxes side by side they would extend for about 15 kilometers.

The library featured in the ABC’s Ronny Chieng: International Student.

Check out the Noel Shaw Gallery on level 1 for exhibitions featuring materials from across the University's Archives and Special Collections.
