The Grainger Museum is the only purpose-built autobiographical museum in Australia. Celebrating the life of composer, Percy Grainger (1882-1961), this heritage listed building was designed by John Gawler, in collaboration with Grainger himself. The museum first opened in 1938 and, according to an essay by Grainger in 1955, aims to “throw light upon the processes of musical composition... during the period in which Australia has been prominent in music – say from about 1880 on.”

Visit the museum to peruse the collection of 50,000 items including personal effects, letters to famous and not-so-famous friends, and the infamous whip collection (yes, it’s exactly what you think) that was only allowed to be displayed once Percy Grainger had passed away.
